Assessing viability of agrivoltaics in corn fields

A team of researchers from Purdue University conducted a study on agrivoltaics, which showed the potential to increase energy production and reduce carbon emissions with minimal impact on crop production. The research compared different scenarios of corn croplands in the midwest region of the United States, analyzing the impact of traditional photovoltaic systems and agrivoltaic systems on food/feed production, energy production, greenhouse gas emissions, and farm profitability. The study concluded that agrivoltaics could provide a viable solution to the food versus fuel debate by optimizing energy production while minimizing the impact on corn as a food/feed resource.
