Battery energy storage facility backed

A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval by Sunderland City Council for its proximity to Offerton substation. The facility by Newton Energi will store energy generated by renewables and release it during periods of extreme demand. Plans include control rooms, storage units, and 28 battery storage containers. The site was chosen due to the close proximity to Offerton substation allowing for below ground connection. Similar schemes faced rejection due to concerns around fire safety.
