The deployment of floating offshore wind turbines in the Gulf of Maine has been assessed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) with no significant impact on the environment. Maine has received an offer for a research lease in state waters located 28 nautical miles off the coast, capable of hosting up to 12 turbines totaling 144 MW capacity. The state aims to deploy 3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040, with BOEM designating an area in the Gulf of Maine for up to 32 GW capacity. Maine is in the process of gathering feedback on its first commercial offshore wind solicitation.
