China boasts two-thirds of utility-scale solar and wind projects under construction

China is leading in renewables with a significant capacity in utility-scale solar and wind projects. The country added almost twice as much utility-scale solar and wind power capacity in 2023 compared to any other year, reaching a total of 758GW by the first quarter of 2024. Distributed solar is also on the rise, with China installing more solar capacity in 2023 than the rest of the world combined. Geographically, distributed solar is prevalent in central and southern provinces, while utility scale solar PV projects dominate western and northern provinces.
