Electric buses are taking over Europe – they outran diesel bus sales in 2023

Electric buses are rapidly gaining popularity in the European Union, with a 36% market share in new city bus sales in 2023. Transport and Environment predicts that 100% of new EU city buses could be zero emission units by 2027. Despite EU regulations lagging behind market trends, countries like Slovenia, Denmark, Netherlands, Ireland, and Finland lead in adopting zero emission city buses. The UK leads in Europe with a 63% share of new sales in 2023. Several EU member states have surpassed the EU average in adopting zero emission buses. The article also highlights the risks European busmakers face in meeting the increasing demand for zero emission buses, with Chinese bus sales gaining traction in Europe.
