A new report from think tank Ember Climate indicates that the world could exceed the 2030 renewable energy deployment target by 21% if all 'spare' manufacturing capacity is utilized. The report emphasizes the potential of using excess manufacturing capacity to improve access to electricity in the Global South. It highlights the mismatch between solar manufacturing capacity and deployment initiatives, with a significant amount of solar capacity remaining unused. China dominates solar capacity additions, while challenges in energy grids contribute to under-deployment of solar panels globally. The report suggests that growing the solar sector in the developing world could help address the issue of under-deployment and create new markets for manufacturers.
