A new report by think tank Ember Climate reveals that the world could surpass the 2030 renewable energy deployment target by 21% if all 'spare' manufacturing capacity is utilized. The report emphasizes the opportunity to improve access to electricity in the Global South by using excess solar manufacturing capacity. China dominates solar capacity additions and is forecasted to lead in n-type cell manufacturing. The article discusses the challenges of under-deployment in energy grids globally and the potential solutions in developing overseas markets to balance manufacturing and deployment. Deploying spare solar manufacturing capacity could extend electricity access to millions in developing countries and contribute to meeting climate targets.
