A new report by Ember Climate suggests that utilizing the 'spare' manufacturing capacity of solar energy could help meet renewable energy targets and improve access to electricity in developing countries. The report highlights the imbalance between global solar manufacturing capacity and deployment, with significant oversupply predicted. It emphasizes the need to address under-deployment challenges, particularly in regions like Europe and the US due to grid capacity issues. China dominates solar manufacturing capacity, contributing to the oversupply. The report recommends expanding solar sector in the Global South to create new markets. Deploying unused solar manufacturing capacity could positively impact over 800 million people, especially in poorer countries, by 2030.
