Since the current European Commission took office in 2019, EU wind and solar capacity has grown significantly, displacing fossil fuel generation and driving down emissions. In 2023, wind capacity reached 219GW with a 31% increase (+52 GW), while solar capacity more than doubled to 257GW (+113%). The increase in wind and solar generation led to a 46% combined increase in generation, pushing wind and solar's share in the EU electricity mix to over a quarter in 2023. Fossil generation decreased by 22% over the same time period, with notable decreases in coal and gas generation.
