First Solar opens Ohio R&D centre, sets new CdTe cell efficiency record

First Solar has opened the Jim Nolan Center for Solar Innovation, the largest solar R&D facility in the Western Hemisphere, in Ohio. The facility focuses on developing CdTe thin film solar cell technology and prototype tandem products. The company expects the new facility to accelerate innovation cycles and maintain the US' strategic advantage in thin film technology. Mark Widmar, CEO of First Solar, highlighted the importance of thin films in commercializing tandem devices and emphasized the need for investments in R&D infrastructure to drive innovation.
