Growth in electricity demand in 2024 and 2025 is forecast to be among the highest levels in the past two decades, with solar alone expected to meet half of the increase. Renewables, particularly solar, are on the rise. Global electricity demand is set to grow by around 4% in 2024 and 2025. Renewable sources are expected to reach a 35% share of global electricity supply by 2025, surpassing coal. Despite increases in renewables, coal power generation remains strong, leading to a slight increase in CO2 emissions in 2024. Notable electricity demand growth is observed in India, China, and the United States. Clean energy's share is rising, but grid expansion and energy efficiency are crucial for sustainability. Data centres' electricity demand, especially AI-driven, is gaining attention, requiring better data tracking and energy efficiency measures.
