Distributed-generation (DG) solar arrays in China have evolved to rival utility-scale sites. In 2023, around 96.3 GW of the 216.3 GW solar generation capacity added in China was commercial and industrial (C&I), residential, and other small- and medium-scale systems. The rise of C&I systems, residential PV, and government initiatives like the Golden Sun Project and the Top-Runner Program have driven installations. Distributed PV arrays have overcome challenges and gained popularity in China due to ease of grid connection, lower costs, and minimal equipment requirements. Despite challenges with grid capacity and policy setbacks, there remains enthusiasm for distributed PV, with falling equipment prices and a focus on grid solutions and time-of-day tariffs.
