Solar panels are highly recyclable, but the use of thin plastic layers can hinder efficient recycling of valuable materials like silicon or silver. NREL has developed a method using femtosecond lasers for glass-to-glass welds in solar cells, reducing the need for plastic laminates. This innovation allows for easier recycling of glass, metal wires, and silicon in solar modules.
