India has seen significant growth in energy storage with a cumulative BESS capacity of 219.1 MWh/111.7 MW as of March 2024. The report by Mercom India highlights the key role of PV systems combined with BESS, accounting for 90.6% of total installed capacity. The rapid increase in intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind has impacted grid stability, leading to the need for efficient renewable integration through policy measures. The VGF program and bidding guidelines are driving the growth of energy storage projects in India. However, there is a call for prioritizing energy storage development to avoid potential issues in grid flexibility and stability due to lagging progress in this sector.
