The Central Electricity Authority in India conducted a study to determine the optimal generation capacity mix for the country in 2029-30. The study found that a generation capacity of 777 GW, with renewables accounting for 62.4%, supported by battery energy storage systems, is the most cost-effective solution. The renewables mix includes large hydro, pumped storage, solar PV, wind, biomass, and small hydro plants. The study projected a decrease in thermal installed capacity and an increase in renewable energy-based installed capacity by 2029-30.
