India's renewable energy storage capacity is expected to surge to 6 GW by fiscal 2028. The energy storage additions will be driven by a robust pipeline of projects and auctions. This increase is crucial to absorb the rising share of renewables in the power generation mix. Storage is vital as solar and wind power's share grows, and surplus generation needs to be stored and discharged for grid balancing. The government is promoting standalone storage systems and storage-linked projects. However, slow progress has been noted due to sluggish adoption by state distribution companies. The government plans to increase renewable capacity to 450 GW by 2030, driving the need for storage to balance the grid.
