A novel zinc-based battery has been developed by Fraunhofer IZM researchers to store energy cost-effectively and produce hydrogen. This battery system is predicted to be able to produce hydrogen at a much lower cost compared to lithium batteries. The researchers aim to develop an electrically rechargeable hydrogen storage system using metallic zinc that can provide electricity and hydrogen on demand. Unlike lithium batteries, zinc storage systems use cheaper and readily available raw materials and are recyclable. Initial laboratory tests have shown promising results, and a demonstrator is expected to be built by the end of 2023 to further research its operation.
