Japan is targeting for 36% to 38% of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030, up from about 20% today. The Japanese government has published the list of battery aggregators that successfully applied to a scheme to promote energy storage systems. The scheme aims to increase the uptake of residential and commercial and industrial (C&I) battery energy storage system (BESS) technology by enabling wider participation in demand response. The scheme is being administered through the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative (SII). The idea is that behind-the-meter distributed batteries installed at homes, commercial premises, and industrial facilities can be used to adjust supply and demand on the electricity grid. Aggregators were selected for home battery systems or C&I systems, with no companies selected to do both scales of BESS. The market for utility-scale BESS in Japan has opened up through policy and regulatory support, energy trading opportunities, and more.
