New research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) shows that the installation of rooftop solar panels on US homes can significantly reduce energy burden, with average savings of US$1,987. The study considered over 400,000 homes in 2021, revealing a decrease in energy burden from 3.3% to 1.3%. Savings vary across different income groups and regions, with solar panels leading to increased burden in the southern region. LBNL suggests that the low electricity cost in Florida hinders potential cost savings. The US government's Justice40 initiative aims to alleviate energy burden for lower-income households through solar projects.
