India has seen rapid growth in installed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity. India's cumulative BESS installations reached 219.1MWh by March 2024. The country has significant developments in renewable energy storage, with projects like solar-plus-storage in Chhattisgarh and pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) projects. Various states like Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan are leading in BESS installations and solar PV deployments respectively. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projects a requirement of 82.37GWh of energy storage by 2026-2027 to achieve India's goal of deploying 500GW of non-fossil fuel generation by 2030. Initiatives like the Energy Storage Obligation (ESO) and tenders for energy storage projects are driving the growth in the sector.
