The MENA region is expected to significantly increase its solar capacity, reaching 40 GW in 2023 and 180 GW by 2030. The growth is driven by competitive solar auctions and large-scale projects but still falls short of the levels needed to replace fossil fuels, which currently make up 87% of the region’s energy mix. Solar power makes up only 2% of this mix. The potential for further growth is substantial, given the region's high solar irradiance and the strategic possibility of exporting solar energy.
