Researchers led by MIT have developed a novel solar-powered brackish water desalination system using flexible batch electrodialysis (EDR) technology. This system, designed to address water scarcity in rural India, aligns water production with available solar power, improving energy use and reducing costs. The research, comparing this new system with conventional PV-EDR and on-grid RO systems, shows significant improvements in efficiency and production speed, substantially lowering the levelized costs of water (LCOW).
