Ofgem's Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework has fast-tracked 26 grid connection projects to provide faster grid connections for renewable projects. The government has allocated £3.4 billion for a subsea and underground 500km cable between Scotland and Yorkshire. The first project under ASTI, Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), will connect Peterhead in Aberdeenshire to Drax in North Yorkshire. The cable will run 436km under the North Sea and 70km underground onshore. Converter stations at both ends will feed electricity into the grid. Ofgem CEO Jonathan Brearly stated that ASTI will expedite EGL2 by two years, ensuring financial adjustments, and maximizing efficiency and consumer benefits. The article also mentions the Yorkshire Green Energy Enablement (GREEN) project and the North London Reinforcement Project for electricity network upgrades and overhead line replacements.
