The Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, owned by OMV Petrom, is set to become the first major producer of sustainable fuels in Southeast Europe. The company is investing EUR 750 million in transforming the 90-year old refinery to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), aiming to cut carbon emissions by 15%. They plan to supply 250,000 tons of sustainable fuels annually from 2028, with an additional EUR 560 million investment in green hydrogen production. Chief Executive Officer Christina Verchere announced a commitment of EUR 11 billion by 2030 to decarbonize the company. OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% stake in Respiră Verde to secure a supply of used edible oil for biofuel production.
