The 200-MW Escalante Solar power plant in McKinley County, New Mexico, developed by US renewables platform Origis Energy, has achieved commercial operation. Located on the site of the former coal-fired Escalante Station near Grants, the solar park started generating power on June 1. The solar array is delivering its electricity to Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association under a power purchase agreement. The project was unveiled in 2020 as part of Tri-State's Responsible Energy Plan. Gridworks and Array Technologies provided construction services and the solar tracking system for the project. Origis Energy secured project tax equity funding for the scheme. Tri-State CEO Duane Highley mentioned that Escalante Solar helps all their members get to 50% clean energy used by 2025, meeting the requirements of New Mexico's Energy Transition Act five years ahead of schedule.
