An international research team analyzed the utilization of solar PV to power data centers in cold climate regions, along with the use of data center waste heat, focusing on scenarios in Finland and northern Japan. The study emphasized the economic benefits of self-generation and energy efficiency investments, especially in light of high electricity prices. The researchers compared solar PV effectiveness, energy supply, and waste heat utilization between the two locations, highlighting differences in waste heat applications. The study found that rooftop and larger solar PV systems, along with waste heat utilization methods, were effective in both countries, with Japan showing higher profitability due to electricity prices and solar performance. The research outcomes were detailed in a publication titled 'Potential of solar photovoltaics and waste heat utilization in cold climate data centers. Case study: Finland and northern Japan' in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews.
