An international research team led by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona developed a hybrid solar energy device combining molecular solar thermal energy storage with silicon-based photovoltaic energy. The device uses organic molecules to store energy and improve solar energy utilization. Experimental tests showed a record energy storage efficiency of 2.3% and a solar utilization efficiency of 14.9%. The system is a significant stride towards a long-duration energy storage technology that complements PV systems.
