Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory developed a methodology to estimate climate and air quality benefits from wind and solar generation. The analysis shows wind and solar generation provided $249 billion of benefits over 2019-2022. The study emphasizes the importance of considering emissions from fossil fuel sources in evaluating renewable energy benefits. The methodology breaks the continental United States into regions based on renewable energy supply, with exclusion of Tennessee. Health benefits worth $62.4 billion were attributed to wind generation in 2022. Solar generation also yielded health benefits worth $11.6 billion. The researchers suggest their approach could be applied globally.
