Saudi Arabia has launched a geographical survey project to identify suitable sites for renewables projects across the nation. The project is described as globally unprecedented by the Saudi Arabian energy minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud. The project will cover all regions of Saudi Arabia, excluding populated and airspace-restricted areas, using advanced measurement devices like solar energy measurement stations equipped with various sensors. Artificial intelligence will be used to assess and rank sites for renewables projects and to accelerate the data acquisition process. Saudi Arabia plans to tender new renewables projects with a capacity of 20GW annually starting from 2024.
