The research team studied patterns of solar buildouts in the states surrounding Chesapeake Bay Watershed and identified drivers for siting, land use, and impacts on biodiversity. Solar development in the region largely avoided important wildlife habitat and natural landcover. Solar array construction favored cultivated lands and areas of average habitat quality. The study aimed to align siting patterns with conservation priorities and emphasized wildlife-friendly solar practices. Solar energy facilities present opportunities for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services.
