Solar and wind energy surpassed coal capacity in China for the first time in June. By 2026, solar power is predicted to exceed coal as China's primary electricity source. China remains the largest global consumer of coal but is implementing stricter restrictions on new coal projects to meet carbon reduction goals. Simeng Deng, Senior Analyst at Rystad Energy, states that China is on track to become a leader in clean energy with a focus on solar energy. Challenges like low utilization and intermittency in clean power capacity need to be addressed in China by upgrading grid infrastructure and adding battery storage. In India, the share of coal in the country's total power capacity fell below 50% for the first time since the 1960s.
