A research group from Switzerland's ETH Zurich has investigated the role of hydrogen storage in an electricity system with large hydropower resources such as that of Switzerland. The study focused on understanding when hydrogen could play a role alongside hydropower and pumped-hydro, especially within the same market. Analyzing scenarios up to the year 2050, the study found that hydrogen storage may be necessary under specific conditions, such as decreased net transfer capacities between countries and high load shedding costs, to ensure self-sufficiency in the Swiss electricity sector.
