EPRI, Southern Company, and Storworks completed testing of a concrete thermal energy storage pilot project in Alabama, US. The project, located at the Ernest C. Gaston Electric Generating plant, features a 10MWh energy storage capacity using heat generated from the gas plant. Thermal energy is stored in concrete blocks and returned to generate electricity. Neva Espinoza of EPRI highlighted the importance of long-duration energy storage for enabling renewable energy integration. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial processes.
