Battery storage systems have the potential to absorb excess electricity, preventing grid congestion. The German Federal Network Agency has established criteria for large grid-connected storage systems. However, the current regulatory framework may not be sufficient for storage operators. Persistent high cost of redispatch measures contribute to rising grid charges. Large battery energy storage systems offer flexibility, but are often underutilized due to cost considerations. The cost-based approach for storage systems creates structural incentives for cost-inflating bidding behavior.
