What’s behind South Korea’s battery fire accidents?

A series of 28 consecutive battery fires in South Korea from 2017-2019 paralyzed the energy storage market, leading to investigations by MOTIE. Defects, lack of protection, and environmental oversight weaknesses were identified. Poor installation practices and risks related to social factors were highlighted as potential causes. Recent research from UNIST considers social factors and risks related to battery fires, leading to changes in government policies. Factors such as environment, regulations, and organizational characteristics influence battery fire risks.
