Researchers at the University of Chicago San Diego have devised design principles for enabling an anode-free all-solid-state battery with high energy density comparable to lithium-ion batteries. The new design stores ions on electrochemical deposition of alkali metal directly on the current collector, offering advantages such as reduced weight, higher cell voltage, lower cost, and increased energy density. However, challenges exist due to the need for good contact between the electrolyte and the current collector in an anode-free battery.
