World’s largest sodium-ion BESS comes online in China as it seeks to diversify away from lithium

The first phase of the world’s largest sodium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) has come online in Qianjiang, Hubei province, China. It comprises 42 BESS containers with sodium-ion batteries and is developed and operated by Datang Hubei Energy Development. The technology aims to address supply chain issues with lithium-ion and is expected to be 15-30% cheaper by 2025.
