Acen secures approval for 1.2 GW solar-plus-battery project in Australia

The New South Wales IPC has granted development consent for Acen Australia’s proposed Birriwa solar and battery project. The project includes a 600 MW solar farm alongside a battery energy storage system of up to 600 MW, with two hours of storage capacity. The project, estimated at AUD 1 billion ($668 million), is planned for a site within the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Acen said that the IPC decision is a significant milestone for the project and construction is anticipated to commence in late 2026 or early 2027.
