Lithium-sulfur batteries offer cheaper and lighter-weight energy storage with cost and safety advantages. Li-S Energy has developed 20-layer battery cells using GEN3 semi-solid state lithium sulfur battery technology, collaborating with Victoria’s Deakin University and PPK Group. The cells eliminate heavy metals used in lithium-ion batteries and provide high energy density and safety. Li-S Energy's batteries are the same size as Li-ion batteries but half the weight. The company is focusing on electric aviation applications and has partnered with magniX for testing.
