Green Gravity, a startup led by former BHP executive Mark Swinnerton, is developing commercial-scale energy storage systems using old mine shafts. They plan to use gravity as the fuel to lower costs and environmental impact compared to traditional storage technologies. The company has partnered with Bluescope and AI specialist xAmplify to build a digital twin-enabled R&D facility called Gravity Lab. By reusing mining assets, Green Gravity aims to achieve similar unit costs to pumped hydro but with lower capital outlay. In November 2022, Green Gravity and GHD Group signed a memorandum of understanding for new storage applications.
