German thin-film solar module manufacturer Avancis has achieved a new world record efficiency for a completely encapsulated CIGS module. The panel with an aperture area of 527 cm2 reached 203% efficiency, certified by the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab. Avancis optimized the Ga-rich Cu (In, Ga) (S, Se)2 absorber bandgap profile and used Na-based post-deposition treatment for the absorber and Cd-free, sputtered Zn (O, S) buffer to achieve this milestone. The company stated that the processes for the record efficiency are easily transferrable to commercial production, enabling almost limitless design freedom in solar facades.
