A battery energy storage facility is being recommended for approval in Sunderland by city planners. The facility proposed by Newton Energi near Foxcover Road would store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels to release during peak demand. The site's proximity to Offerton substation allows for below ground connection. A decision will be made by Sunderland City Council on 2 September. Similar plans in Boldon Colliery were rejected recently. Concerns around fire safety have been raised with the increasing number of battery storage plants in the UK.
