Battery energy storage facility backed

A battery energy storage facility project is recommended for approval by city planners in Sunderland. Newton Energi intends to build the facility near Foxcover Road to store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels. The project aims to release stored energy during peak demand periods. The facility is located close to Offerton substation, enabling a below ground connection. The decision on the application is scheduled for 2nd September by Sunderland City Council. Similar plans in Boldon Colliery were rejected. Concerns over fire safety have been raised for battery storage plants in the UK.
