A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval by city planners in Sunderland. The development by Newton Energi aims to store energy generated by renewables like wind and solar panels for release during periods of extreme demand. The site, close to Offerton substation, would house around 28 battery storage containers with a lifespan of 35 years. Similar schemes faced rejection due to concerns around fire safety. The UK sees a rise in battery storage plants amid opposition.
