Battery energy storage facility backed

City planners recommended the approval of a battery energy storage facility by Newton Energi in Sunderland to store energy from renewables and release it during peak demand. The site near Foxcover Road will have storage containers and control rooms. A decision will be made by Sunderland City Council on 2 September. A similar scheme in Boldon Colliery was rejected due to fire safety concerns. Battery storage plants are increasing in the UK, though facing opposition.
