A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval in Sunderland to store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels. The facility will release stored energy during periods of extreme demand. Plans include control rooms, storage units, and 28 battery storage containers. The site was chosen for its proximity to Offerton substation for below ground connection. The facility would have a 35-year lifespan. Similar plans in Boldon Colliery were rejected. Concerns around fire safety have been raised regarding battery storage plants in the UK.
