A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval in Sunderland by city planners. It will store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels and release it during peak demand. The facility, planned by Newton Energi, will have a 35-year lifespan and is located near Offerton substation. Similar schemes are facing opposition due to concerns around fire safety.
