Battery energy storage facility backed

A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval in Sunderland by city planners. The facility, proposed by Newton Energi, aims to store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels and release it during peak demand times. The plans include control rooms, storage units, and 28 battery storage containers. The site's proximity to Offerton substation enables a below ground connection. However, a similar scheme in Boldon Colliery was recently rejected. Battery storage plants are on the rise in the UK but face challenges such as fire safety concerns.
