A battery energy storage facility is proposed for approval in Sunderland by Newton Energi near Foxcover Road. The facility aims to store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels and release it during peak demand. The site, if approved, would have a lifespan of 35 years. Plans for a similar scheme in Boldon Colliery were rejected. Battery storage plants are on the rise in the UK, facing opposition mainly due to fire safety concerns.
