A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval by city planners in Sunderland. Newton Energi plans to build the facility near Foxcover Road to store energy from renewables like wind and solar panels. The facility aims to release stored energy during periods of high demand. The site's proximity to Offerton substation allows below ground connection. The lifespan of the facility is projected to be 35 years. Similar schemes have faced rejection in other areas like Boldon Colliery. There are concerns about fire safety with the increasing number of battery storage plants across the UK.
